On 21 October 1975, 24 people from Koumaros living in Athens signed the founding act of an association for their village, on the initiative of Petros Vidalis. The lawyer Spyros Manouras drafted the statute free of charge, and the Athens Multi-Member Court of First Instance approved it by decision 1324/1976 on 18 May 1976 — which is why the marble plaque in the hall reads “Founded 1976”. In 2026 the Association turns 50: see its story, year by year.
Its full official name, as written in the founding minutes, is the “Beautification, Charitable and Educational Association of those living in Athens, Piraeus and the surrounding area and originating from the village of Koumaros, Tinos — ‘O KOUMAROS’”, based in Athens. Its feast day is the Transfiguration of the Saviour, on 6 August.
Our aims
From the statute:
- to strengthen friendship, brotherhood and solidarity among members,
- to support the interests of members and of our home village, Koumaros,
- to preserve the traditions and customs of Tinos,
- to create cultural events and projects in the village,
- to keep members in close touch with Koumaros.
Projects
Since 1977 the Association has carried out, or pressed the authorities to carry out, dozens of works in the village: the clubhouse, lighting for the arches, sewerage, paving, the playground, the guesthouse, and volunteer work in the lanes every year. See all the works, year by year.
Every year
- New Year’s pie in January, with the year’s report: in Athens on 6 January, as the statute provides, at the Leonteios School of Nea Smyrni, and a few days later in the village.
- Trips: hundreds since 1977 — the first, in March 1977, to Rovies in Evia with three coaches. The latest: Meteora–Lake Plastiras (November 2025), Korfos–Nafplio (June 2025), Gytheio–Mani (April 2025).
- Easter: a meal of love in the Association’s hall.
- Summer: the Transfiguration feast (5–6 Aug), the island feast on 17 August and an event for children.
- Island feast in Athens: held in autumn 2023 and 2024, at the Eliza venue in Ilioupoli.
- Christmas: the greeting-card budget goes to charity.
- The Koumaros calendar, almost every year.
- Volunteer days cleaning and painting the village.
The island feast over the years
The island feast of the Vangelistra is held on 17 August. Some years it moved by a day or two. It was not held from 2020 to 2022 because of the pandemic, and returned in 2023.
